I used to think that having a black bear stroll through my yard would be like living on a Disney movie set where forest friends frolic and live together in harmony.

That was until I saw what a 350-pound bear could do to my trash can in a single swipe. Big mess. I also learned how dangerous it was to the bear to become acclimated to human encounters and human trash.

The BearWise program was developed by experts from the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and offers practical tips for safely and responsibly living with black bears.
