Turquoise waters surround hardwood hammocks at Lignumvitae Key Botanical Park

by The 100 Companies

Lignumvitae Key, translating to “wood of life” from Latin, is 185 acres of hardwood hammock accessible only by watercraft in the Upper Keys. It remains largely pristine because Henry Flagler’s Overseas Highway passed by the tiny island.

The botanical state park also includes 10,000 acres of turquoise waters surrounding the island which visitors say is a paddling paradise.

You’ll find an area dense with endangered plants, protected insects and birds, a historic home and mysterious ruins. The dense hardwood growing here is the heaviest in the world. And rare Florida purplewing butterflies flit about, feasting on the crabwood trees here.
