Even though it does not feel like fall in Florida, ’tis the season for black bears to fatten up in preparation for winter. With bears foraging for up to 20 hours per day, in a race to eat 20,000 calories, there is a greater chance of a bear encounter in your neighborhood.

BearWise.org recently released a blog with helpful tips to remove attractants such as barbeques, gardens and bird feeders. In Collier County, residents can also purchase bear-resistant trash containers to deter animal foraging.

With these simple safety tips, you can reduce the chance of a negative bear encounter.
