Sharks aren’t the scariest thing in the ocean … watch out for poop. A report from Environment America says half of U.S. beaches had unsafe contamination levels last year.
Of 363 beaches tested, one out of nine had fecal contamination and some of the worst are on the Gulf Coast. Contaminated water can cause gastrointestinal illness, ear/eye infections, respiratory disease and skin rashes.
Every year, about 29 million people get sick after splashing in the ocean. For safety’s sake, don’t get in the ocean if you have an open cut, rinse off after swimming and don’t drink the water.
