Charlotte Harbor is a popular destination lying between Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda. If you have visited, you have something in common with late President Teddy Roosevelt.
An avid hunter, Roosevelt didn’t normally plan fishing excursions because he thought them too sedate. However, the challenge of catching a “devil fish,” also known as a manta ray, piqued his interest.
On his excursion, Roosevelt and his guides came upon massive manta rays, which lived up to their devilish reputations. After being harpooned, one manta ray dragged the boat – and the president – for an 11-minute, half-mile ride around Charlotte Harbor.
