A recent social media post by @MyFWC shared the record-breaking stats from this year’s Lionfish Challenge.
As an invasive species, lionfish are ravenous predators that compete with native species for food resources. With their venomous spines, they’ve been known to herd prey before consuming.
While the spines are venomous, the flesh of the fish is commonly eaten around the world. According to the FWC, several Florida restaurants, grocery stores and seafood markets sell commercially harvested lionfish. With its mild taste and flaky texture, lionfish is often enjoyed grilled.
