Civil Rights landmark offers coastal sanctuary from urban bustle

The Dr. Von D. MizellEula Johnson State Park, located south of Port Everglades in Dania Beach, is the last stretch of undeveloped coastal ecosystem in Broward County, not far from a bustling city.

This park, at 6503 N. Ocean Drive, was once the designated “colored beach” and now bears the name of the two Civil Rights activists who led the “wade-in” protests desegregating the Whites-only beaches on Las Olas.

The park has a full complement of activities, including a boat ramp. Birdwatchers see not only those attracted to the park’s stretch of sand, but also the park’s tropical hardwood hammock.
