Burrowing owls are familiar to residents of Cape Coral, home to the most burrowing owls in the state of Florida. Marco Island also boasts the second-largest population of the owls (behind Cape Coral).
These tiny birds prefer to make their homes underground, in areas of open land with low vegetation, such as farm or agricultural land. The birds also like golf courses.
This pint-sized owl has been placed on Florida’s threatened species list due to the continued loss of its habitat. The threats to the habitat include increased construction projects, flooding and harassment by domestic animals and people.
