Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is open and inviting military members and veterans for a free day at the Sanctuary to explore the 2.25-mile boardwalk that serves as the gateway to a gentle, pristine wilderness, with giant cypress trees over 500 years old. Relax your body, mind, and soul as you immerse yourself in old Florida wilderness alongside the boardwalk, as it meanders through pine flatwood, wet prairie, marshes, and the largest old-growth bald cypress forest in North America. Keep your eyes peeled for alligators, otters, white-tailed deer, red-bellied turtles, frogs and a wide variety of wading birds, songbirds, and raptors.
Event visitors can take advantage of resting spots along the shady boardwalk, an interpretive table, “forest bathing meditation”, and a guided “nature heals” tour. This Veteran’s Day event is free for members of the military and veterans and discounted for other visitors. After the boardwalk, visitors may have a peek inside the Visitor Center Nature Store to buy a souvenir or grab a snack or beverage.
