Athletes ages 9-14 who run and jump a lot on hard surfaces (especially in basketball, track, or gymnastics) can get a condition called Sever’s disease, or calcaneal apophysitis, which is a common cause of heel pain in pre-teens and teens. The pain is from swelling of the growth plate, which is made of cartilage and more prone to injury than the rest of the heel.
