The Alliance for Period Supplies of SWFL is raising awareness about a hidden crisis impacting local girls and women. Donations of as little as $43 can provide period supplies for one girl for an entire year.
Period poverty statistics:
• One in four women cannot afford period supplies.
• Two in five girls have missed school because they don’t have this basic necessity.
• State and federal aid programs, including SNAP (food stamps), cannot be used to purchase period products because they are considered “a luxury item.”
Rags, sox, paper towels and newspaper are used as substitutes, leading to emotional and health issues.
