Staying safe from scams during storm season

Hurricane season has started for Southwest Florida residents, and we have advice to help people avoid falling victim to scams.

After natural disasters, scammers begin their various criminal schemes to take your money. Often, they pose as contractors and insurance companies offering to repair your home while asking to be paid in cash. It appears to be a good offer in a time of disaster.

Do not fall victim to these scams. Verify that all contractors are licensed and all government and insurance workers have proper identification. The National Center for Disaster Fraud also offers its own Disaster Fraud Hotline.
