In the current era of abundant Imposter Syndrome, I’ve noticed two trends: First, communication is increasingly distilled down to expected (ahem canned) responses rather than real connection; even worse, those keen on trying to impress get easily offended when stopped for clarification.
To remedy these, I’ve begun weaving a light-hearted response into the conversation when I’m not following:
“Explain it to me like I attended the Kentucky Public Schools.” Which I did.
There’s something refreshing about catching folks off guard, simply by saying something unexpected and enjoying what comes of it … especially if authenticity and connection are among the outcomes.
