Up to 4% of adults have sleepwalked (including me) and 1.5% of adults struggle with it regularly. While the phenomenon can’t be attributed to one single cause, several factors can play a role, such as stress, sleep deprivation and medications.
Managing stress and developing good bedtime routines can reduce the risk of sleepwalking. However, you can also protect yourself and reduce the chance of injury by cleaning up obstacles that you might trip over while sleepwalking. It’s also a good idea to lock your door and sleep with clothes on – just in case you make it outside.
