With 80% of the global population now staying home to fight the spread of COVID-19, reports indicate that domestic violence is on the rise worldwide. Increases have varied from 32% in France, to 40% in Brazil. According to Spain’s Ministry of Equality, a state-run hotline has seen a 270% increase.

Tech professionals, such as makers of the UrSafe app, have stepped up to offer a lifeline by removing paywalls during quarantine. With voice recognition activation, users can send an “SOS” to trusted family members and emergency services. When triggered, the code word also starts a video recording of the incident.
