During the heated elections last month, we all heard calls for increased civility for our nation.
What I have learned in my experience as a leader and community servant is that civility is rooted in respect for others. Respect for others is best exemplified in our willingness to listen to understand in difficult conversations, not just listen to reply.
Whether in our business or in teaching our next generation of leaders, we should not avoid difficult conversations. Rather, we should have those difficult conversations and show our respect for others through our willingness to truly listen and hear opposing views.
