The ‘pink wave’ swells in SWFL

The 2018 midterm election saw a significant increase in the number of women running for elected positions throughout the country.

Political pundits dubbed this the “pink wave” and credit the current political climate and the #MeToo movement for empowering women to run for office. In races for congressional seats, 23% of all candidates were women.

How did we compare locally? Checks of our region’s Supervisor of Elections (three of whom are women) show the percentage of female candidates in 2018 elections were as follows: Lee County: 15%, Collier County: 20%, Charlotte County: 28%, Glades County: 42% and Hendry County: 43%.
