State park at the edge of Key West offers natural, historical bonanza

by The 100 Companies

At the southern edge of Key West, at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, attendees will find a historical bonanza – the world’s largest Civil War armaments cache – as well as a natural setting worthy of the Great Florida Birding Trail.

Strolling through the fort, named for the country’s 12th President, past cannon and gun ports, brings history alive. Re-enactors conduct historic demonstrations every third weekend each month and one learns of the fort’s role in the Civil War and the Spanish-American War.

The southern end of the park boasts a beach with opportunities for picnicking, swimming, snorkeling, paddling, and fishing.
