Sales of cheaper, plastic eggs rise as Easter approaches

by Sally Schroder

More people are planning to paint plastic eggs for Easter than chicken-made ones, which at $4.21 per dozen in February are more than double their price in 2020.

A carton of dyeable, plastic white eggs now goes for $3 at Target. That includes four liquid pouches and four plastic bags to reduce spillage.

Chicken egg prices skyrocketed over the last year, thanks in part to the spread of Avian Flu, which prompted the slaughter of 58 million birds last year.

The price also went up as farmers compensated for higher costs due to inflation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
