Do your part to protect water quality

rain garden

Feeling frustrated and concerned about our water quality? You can protect our coastlines by installing a rain garden. Three simple steps to make a home rain garden:

• Select the right site. Rain gardens work best when placed at the bottom of downspouts or low spots in the landscape.
• Outline garden and determine depth.
• Select Florida-friendly plants such as the ones suggested by the University of Florida IFAS Extension.

When selecting plants, consider how much sun the site gets and how much space is available. Make sure the plants are not just water tolerant but also drought tolerant for the times between rains.
