Miami-Dade moves to crack down on DMV ‘appointment scalpers’

Miami-Dade officials say the long lines and wait times plaguing Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) sites for year aren’t happening naturally.

Now they’re doing something about it.

Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez said he uncovered a “network of appointment scalpers ” who use the DMV’s free online scheduling portal to hoard appointments and resell them for a profit, creating false demand.

This week, County Commissioners gave a preliminary OK to an ordinance by Kevin Marino Cabrera that would levy $500 fines against anyone who engages in the “unauthorized sale of public service appointments.”

Final approval of the measure is expected in April.
