As South Floridians head into summer boating season, local mother June Smith is on a mission to promote boater safety and awareness.
According to FWC’s 2021 Boating Accidents Statistical Report, there were 751 reportable boating accidents and 60 boating-related fatalities during the last calendar year.
After losing her daughter Harlie in a Cudjoe Key boating accident in August 2017, Smith founded Heart Like Harlie to raise boater safety awareness and support organizations helping families cope with loss.
Smith creates and sells sea-inspired jewelry, with proceeds raising funds to purchase fire, EMS and rescue boats crucial during medical emergencies at sea.
