One day, artificial intelligence-directed machines may end up writing better stories than humans do, but fortunately, we’re not there yet. For now, the more tangible and compelling case for computers and storytelling is that they can validate with data what we feel when we experience stories.
The best example of this is the work of the team managing The Story Learning Machine at the MIT Media Lab. Researchers had AI consume 2,000 videos, including 500 Hollywood films, and had humans experience some of the same content. Among the conclusions: The machines and humans both love happy endings.
